Situata a ridosso della costa dell'antica città etrusca di Tarquinia, la Riserva tutela l'unica salina del Lazio e una delle poche rimaste lungo la costa italiana, inattiva dal 1997. Nonostante la limitata estensione, 150 ettari di cui circa 100 di laguna costiera, è un sito di importanza notevole per la sosta, l'alimentazione e la riproduzione dell'avifauna.
Per gli ambienti rappresentati e gli uccelli che la frequentano, la salina è riconosciuta tanto come sito d'importanza comunitaria (Sic) che come zona di protezione speciale (Zps).
La Riserva è stata istituita nel 1980 ed è gestita dal Corpo forestale dello Stato.
