Istituita nel 1983, la Riserva si trova all'estremo nord del Lazio, al confine con Umbria e Toscana. Si trova completamente all'interno del territorio comunale di Acquapendente e occupa una superficie di circa 3000 ettari. Insiste interamente su territori demaniali, quindi non vi sono proprietà private (un'autentica rarità, per le aree protette italiane) e i boschi ricoprono circa il 98% della superficie, per lopiù querceti misti anche se non mancano macchia mediterranea e rimboschimenti di conifere. Grazie alla particolare collocazione geografica e alle vicende storiche del territorio la Riserva ospita flora e fauna molto ricche.
