E' uno dei parchi più grandi del Lazio. Sorprendentemente ricco e "selvatico" nonostante le quote modeste e la vicinanza alla metropoli, comprende la fronte dell'Appennino verso la pianura tirrenica. La montagna più alta è il Pellecchia, 1368 metri a dominio della valle del torrente Licenza. I paesaggi del Parco comprendono boschi, ampi pianori carsici, laghetti: e una corona di piccoli paesi con le case strette ai piedi di massicci castelli.
