L'area protetta comprende i resti dell'affascinante "città morta" di Monterano, abbandonata a inizio Ottocento, su uno sperone tufaceo tra i monti della Tolfa e il lago di Bracciano. L'ambiente naturale che circonda i ruderi è di grande bellezza tra pascoli, boschi e corsi d'acqua: non a caso l'area ha ospitato il set di famosi film ambientati nel passato, da Ben-Hur (1959) con Charlton Heston a Il marchese del grillo (1981) con Alberto Sordi. Il territorio della riserva comprende anche testimonianze d'epoca etrusca, forre e sorgenti sulfuree
