Istituita nel 1997, l'Area Protetta interessa un sistema di rilievi collinari tra le propaggini meridionali dei Monti Lucretili e il corso dell'Aniene. Boschi, cespuglieti, garighe e pascoli sono gli ambienti della Riserva, che ricade interamente nel territorio comunale di Tivoli.
Di natura calcarea, nonostante la quota massima di 612 metri il Monte Catillo offre ampi panorami grazie alla sua collocazione ai margini della Campagna Romana. Ed è sempre la posizione, tra le ultime alture appenniniche e la grande piana alluvionale verso la metropoli capitolina, a giustificare il suo primo motivo d'interesse naturalistico e cioè quello botanico.
A pochi minuti da ben conosciute mete turistiche quali Villa Adriana, Villa Gregoriana, Villa d'Este e lo stesso centro storico di Tivoli, i sentieri della Riserva offrono paesaggi appartati, scorci verdeggianti e una natura da intenditori.
