Istituita nel 1996, la Riserva Naturale Statale del Litorale Romano è una delle più singolari dell'intero sistema nazionale di Aree Protette. Misura 15.900 ettari, vale a dire circa il doppio del parco nazionale del Circeo, e nel suo perimetro dalla forma quanto mai frastagliata (misura oltre 140 km) è incluso un mosaico di ambienti naturali scampati all'urbanizzazione. E sono boschi sempreverdi, argini e foci fluviali, dune, zone umide, distese di macchia mediterranea, tratti di Campagna Romana di sorprendente bellezza. Anche i paesaggi agrari sono diffusi, dominati dalle linee rette di canali, collettori, idrovore delle grandi bonifiche costiere realizzate a partire dalla fine dell'Ottocento. Assieme ad essi, alcuni siti archeologici tra i più importanti d'Italia – come ad esempio Ostia Antica – testimoniano ancora del passato illustre di questo tratto di Lazio costiero.
