L'Area Protetta comprende uno dei più bei boschi del piccolo gruppo montuoso dei Prenestini, a est di Roma. E' ricca di preziose specie vegetali e popolata da una fauna interessante. Dopo secoli di sfruttamento, dagli anni Settanta del secolo scorso la Selva non conosce più il morso della sega e conserva al suo interno esemplari maestosi di cerro e altre essenze arboree. Grazie alla tenace azione di associazioni di cittadini, dopo l'apposizione dei vincoli idrogeologico e paesistico nel 2000 è avvenuta l'istituzione del Monumento Naturale da parte della Regione Lazio assieme a quello della non lontana Valle delle Cannuccete.
