Si estende in forma circolare a coprire l'area dell'antico apparato vulcanico dei Colli Albani, attivo fino a diecimila anni fa. Boschi, radure verdeggianti come i Pratoni del Vivaro e soprattutto i laghi che occupano il fondo dei crateri offrono paesaggi sorprendenti e occasioni di facili passeggiate nella natura. Il parco offre numerose attrattive culturali oltre che naturalistiche.
