La prima area protetta regionale del Lazio, istituita nel lontano 1979 (legge regionale 4 aprile 1979, n. 21) ai sensi della Convenzione di Ramsar, tutela un'estesa zona umida creata dall'uomo. Si tratta infatti del cosiddetto "lago di Nazzano", formatosi a seguito della realizzazione di una diga sul Tevere nel suo medio corso, a valle dell'omonimo paese. A distanza di più di un quarto di secolo, la vegetazione si è adattata alle mutate condizioni ambientali e il regime di protezione ha fatto il resto. Oggi questo è uno dei siti più interessanti dell'Italia centrale per il birdwatching e l'osservazione del mondo affascinante e poco conosciuto della palude.
