I monti della Riserva sono i Carseolani, tra i bacini dei fiumi Salto e Turano, massicci calcarei che sfiorano quota 1500 metri nel settore meridionale della provincia di Rieti.
Istituita nel 1988, poi ampliatasi con il consenso dei Comuni interessati, l'Area Protetta comprende un territorio da sempre di confine: ieri tra i Sabini e gli Equi, poi tra Stato Pontificio e Borbonico, oggi tra Alta Sabina e Cicolano.
Comprende e tutela un angolo di Lazio appartato, dove le principali attrazioni turistiche sono rappresentate dai laghi artificiali del Salto e del Turano. I sentieri che la solcano spesso regalano ampi panorami, e l'atmosfera che si vive su montagne ben più note ed elevate.
