E' un'Area Protetta che interessa un settore dell'Appennino laziale ai confini con l'Abruzzo, a ridosso dell'A24 Roma-L'Aquila. In un paesaggio tipicamente appenninico, comprende rilievi calcarei incisi da valli profonde, estese praterie d'alta quota e fitti boschi di faggio, sormontati in quota da bastioni rocciosi dall'aspetto tipicamente alpino quali quelli del Murolungo, del Costone e del Morrone. Gioiello paesistico dell'area è il piccolo lago della Duchessa, a 1.788 metri di quota, che occupa il fondo di una vasta conca di origine glaciale, poi modellata dal carsismo, circondata da prati-pascoli. Ricchissima la biodiversità.
