L'area protetta comprende due piccoli laghi situati al centro della conca di Rieti, solcata dalle acque del fiume Velino. Circondati da canneti e lembi di bosco igrofilo, sullo sfondo maestoso del Terminillo, sono luoghi ideali per il birdwatching ospitando soprattutto nei mesi invernali e in occasione dei passi migratori un gran numero di uccelli.
