E' stata la prima Area Protetta a venire istituita nel Lazio, nel lontano 1934. Ottomila ettari per tutelare il tratto di litorale più integro della Regione, compresi quattro laghi costieri, una vasta foresta di pianura, la più selvaggia delle isole dell'arcipelago pontino nonché la montagna della leggendaria maga Circe, che secondo Omero incantò Ulisse e i suoi compagni durante il viaggio di ritorno a Itaca.
