La riserva è situata nella valle del fiume Liri, nel tratto in cui questa si allarga tra il massiccio del Monte Cairo a nord e le catene dei Monti Ausoni e dei Monti Aurunci a sud. Il lago di San Giovanni Incarico, bacino artificiale creato negli anni Venti del secolo scorso dallo sbarramento del fiume Liri, ha acque popolate da una grande varietà di pesci. Sulle sponde, dove s'incontrano numerose specie di uccelli, crescono pioppi e salici con ampi canneti. Rientrano nell'area protetta i notevoli resti della colonia romana di Fregellae, fondata nel 328 a.C., nonché quelli di Fabrateria Nova.
